Dear Jepson School Alumni and Friends,
February has been an exciting month, marked by two winter storms that transformed our campus into a snowy wonderland. But even more exciting was the return to campus of 40 alums who led the school’s annual Jepson EDGE Institute on Feb. 16. During this daylong professional development program for juniors, alumni frequently mentioned how their leadership studies education benefits their careers.
Indeed, it does! This issue of The Jepson Update offers stories of remarkable alumni using their leadership education daily: A UPS executive leading a company-wide transformation, a lobbyist advocating for a premier research and teaching hospital, a filmmaker racking up national and international awards for her first short film, and a financial planner building a nationally recognized wealth management practice.
Our faculty, too, are leaders. Take, for example, Dr. Terry Price, a philosopher who researches leadership ethics. The State Council of Higher Education for Virginia recently named him a recipient of its Outstanding Faculty Award, the highest honor for faculty at Virginia's public and private colleges and universities.
Our students continue to thrive by embracing the many curricular and co-curricular opportunities afforded them, including faculty-mentored research, study abroad, and credit-bearing internships. This month alone, seven students have presented or will present their research at conferences in Los Angeles, Denver, and Richmond.
Also, this month, we welcomed the McDowell Institute’s inaugural practitioner-in-residence, Greg Lukianoff, president and CEO of the civil liberties nonprofit Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE). He engaged students and faculty from across campus in lively discussions about free speech in higher education.
Jepson remains an exciting place to be! You contribute to our success through your gifts of time, talent, and resources, for which I am most grateful. Please stay engaged with the school by attending our upcoming Jepson Leadership Forum presentations and McDowell Institute public lecture, donating to the Jepson School during UR Here Giving Day on April 9-10, following us on social media, and of course, reading this latest issue of The Jepson Update.
With gratitude and best wishes,

After joining UPS in December 2023 as president of US Marketing, Product, and Revenue Management, Kate Mandrell, ’12, realized the Fortune 500 company needed to simplify the way it went to market. So, she worked with her team of over 300 Marketing, Product, and Revenue Management division employees to devise a customer-centric, go-to-market approach that represents a major pivot in the way UPS does business.
As the senior director of state government relations for VCU Health, Mark Hickman, ’07, lobbies legislators on behalf of an entity that comprises four hospitals, one college, and four health sciences schools that together had over $3.5 billion in total operating revenue in the 2023-24 fiscal year. His work supports VCU Health’s threefold mission to treat patients, educate health care professionals, and conduct cutting-edge medical research.
Caroline McNamara, ’18, did a course correction when she left her job as a litigation paralegal in 2022 to pursue a career as a filmmaker, a dream connected to her lifelong love of storytelling. In the last six months, her first film short, A Date with Destiny, has won 10 national and international awards, and counting. She is now hard at work on her next film short, The LA Story.
His interest in leadership and service led Eric Van Der Hyde, ’08, to choose a career in financial planning and wealth management. Today, as the cofounder and partner of Richmond-based Concentric Wealth Partners and a nationally recognized financial planner, he helps his clients meet their financial goals while also giving back to his community.
The State Council of Higher Education for Virginia named leadership studies professor Terry Price an Outstanding Faculty Award recipient. The SCHEV Outstanding Faculty Awards are the highest honor for faculty at Virginia’s public and private colleges and universities, recognizing superior accomplishments in teaching, research, and public service.
“Free speech is inextricably linked to knowledge,” Greg Lukianoff, the inaugural McDowell Institute practitioner-in-residence, said during his recent visit to campus. The president and CEO of the nonprofit civil liberties group Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) urged students and faculty to combat cancel culture and promote the free exchange of ideas.
We invite you to join us for these upcoming public lectures: The Jepson Leadership Forum hosts Columbia University sociologist Peter Bearman on March 4 for his presentation "Class, Status, and Party" and K-12 education writer Natalie Wexler on April 15 for her presentation "Curriculum Wars." The McDowell Institute hosts University of Virginia sociologist Brad Wilcox on March 27 for his presentation "Mammon or Marriage?"
Save the date for UR Here Giving Day, from noon April 9 to midnight April 10! By donating to the Jepson School during UR’s annual 36-hour fundraising blitz, you support student research, student travel to conferences and competitions, class field trips, McDowell Institute programming, and more. More informaton to come!
